About the research
The research component of the PRISMA Project is structured in an applied and progressive manner, with development planned between 2026 and 2030.
The aim is to understand the challenges involved in applying the Principle of the Best Interests of the Child (BIC) within the work of the Judiciary and Welfare Services, as well as to test tools that can support more consistent and child- or adolescent-centred decisions and interventions.
Research Process
The research will have three integrated phases. Each stage will contribute to deepening knowledge of the topic and supporting the development and testing of tools aimed at professional practice.
Implementation
In this initial phase, the project will establish the institutional and operational foundations necessary for its launch.
Planned activities include:
• project structure organization
• liaison with partner institutions and Welfare services
• planning research and training activities
This stage will create the conditions for the consistent development of subsequent phases.
Mapping
In this phase, the research will focus on understanding how the Best Interests Principle is applied within the work of the Judiciary and Welfare Services.
The Mapping will identify:
• existing knowledge about BIC
• attitudes and perceptions of professionals
• challenges encountered in practice
• opportunities for improvement
The results of this mapping will guide both training activities and the development of decision-making support tools.
Feasibility Test
In this phase, the project will assess the feasibility of using the Best Interests Matrix in real professional contexts.
The objective is to analyze:
• suitability of the tool for the institutional context
• usefulness in supporting decisions and evaluations
• potential necessary adjustments
The results of this stage will contribute to the improvement of the tool and the production of resources aimed at professional practice.
